Overview
On October 8, 2024, the Opioid Remediation Collaborative (ORC) launched the Safety First curriculum at Infinity High School in Belen, New Mexico. This initiative engaged 80 students in a comprehensive, harm-reduction-based drug education program.
Originally developed by Stanford Medicine’s REACH Lab, the Safety First curriculum was adapted into an 8-session format to accommodate the school’s schedule. The program covered various substances, including alcohol, opioids/fentanyl, psychedelics, and others, providing scientifically accurate information to empower students to make informed decisions.
The curriculum emphasized abstinence while also offering harm reduction strategies for students who might encounter substance use. Interactive and empathetic lessons acknowledged the diverse experiences of students, fostering a supportive environment for open discussions about drug use and prevention.
ORC extends gratitude to the Infinity High School team for their collaboration in implementing this impactful program, marking a significant step toward enhancing youth education and well-being in the community.
