Presentation Synopsis
This educational presentation by the Opioid Remediation Collaborative (ORCNM) explores the broad medical consequences of alcohol use, with particular emphasis on co-use with opioids. It provides evidence-based insights into alcohol’s effects on various organ systems, its role in chronic disease, cancer risk, and the complex challenges posed by co-occurring substance use disorders.
Learning Objectives
-
Explain the physiological and systemic effects of alcohol use on key organs including the brain, liver, heart, pancreas, kidneys, and immune system.
-
Describe the metabolic processing of alcohol and its role in contributing to diseases such as pancreatitis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and neuropathy.
-
Recognize the compounded health risks of alcohol use in individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD), including higher overdose potential and treatment challenges.
-
Identify the association between alcohol consumption and increased risk of multiple cancers, including breast, liver, colorectal, and head and neck cancers.
-
Discuss the impact of alcohol on mental health, cognitive functioning, and neurodegeneration, including alcohol-related dementias and peripheral neuropathies.
-
Evaluate the evidence on the safety of alcohol consumption, especially in populations with comorbid substance use disorders, and articulate why “moderation” may not be risk-free.
