Overview

On August 22, 2024, the Opioid Remediation Collaborative (ORC) hosted a Community Listening Session at the County Manager’s Office in Lordsburg, New Mexico. This gathering provided a platform for residents to share their perspectives on opioid use disorder (OUD) prevention and treatment within Hidalgo County.

Attendees emphasized the importance of reducing the stigma associated with seeking treatment for OUD and enhancing the knowledge of behavioral health providers regarding evidence-based services. The need for greater unity and collaboration among service providers was highlighted to ensure individuals receive comprehensive care. Concerns were raised about the overwhelming burden on law enforcement dealing with addiction-related issues, underscoring the necessity for practical treatment recommendations for court-ordered individuals and consistent follow-up.

The community identified a pressing need to expand Recovery Housing opportunities and suggested that Hidalgo County would benefit from accessible inpatient and outpatient services. Additionally, participants advocated for treatment services that address basic needs, recognizing that factors such as housing and employment significantly impact recovery. The session also highlighted the importance of strengthening crisis response systems for individuals facing mental health and addiction challenges and providing support to families affected by addiction.

The ORC is committed to incorporating this valuable feedback into actionable strategies to enhance OUD prevention and treatment services in Hidalgo County.
